Japan Post may suspend some operations due to bear sightings

Japan Post has announced that it may temporarily suspend mail collection and delivery services in certain areas where bear sightings have been reported, as part of safety measures amid a nationwide surge in bear activity.

The postal operator said that if local authorities or police issue access restrictions due to confirmed bear appearances, or if continuing operations is deemed dangerous, it will pause some services to protect its employees.

Additionally, in regions where bears have been spotted, motorcycle-based deliveries will generally be halted after 5 p.m., which could lead to delays in mail and parcel delivery. Delivery staff may also be asked to park vehicles on customers’ property to reduce the risk of encounters while walking to delivery points.

In some cases, counter services at nearby post offices might be temporarily suspended depending on the situation. The move reflects growing concern across Japan as bear sightings — particularly of Asian black bears — have reached record levels. Officials have reported tens of thousands of sightings and increased bear incursions into populated areas, prompting other businesses and local governments to adjust operations and safety protocols.

Japan Post has asked for public understanding and cooperation, acknowledging that the changes may inconvenience some customers while prioritizing staff safe.
